GLASS is the acronym for the Green Lane Association, an Association of Clubs and individuals committed to the preservation of vehicular rights on non-metalled Rights of Way. There are currently around 620 members, with 18 Associated clubs. There are three Committees, with a Public Relations Committee being responsible for promoting the Association and a Highways Committee being tasked with keeping an overview of changes in Rights of Way legislation, answering members technical queries, etc. An Executive Committee co-ordinates the whole.

GLASS has a single trailer which is used to support the exhibition stand at 4x4 shows - and others - around the country.

The system of Area Representatives ensures that a detailed local knowledge of geography and conditions is available to visiting green-laners. Many Area Reps have organised pub meets, and these provide an opportunity for members to become acquainted with developments.

The quarterly GLASS magazine, 'Green Lanes', is the primary method of keeping the members in touch with developments, with articles on laning trips, repair work, and Byway claims around the country. It is hoped that a supplementary newsletter will be financially viable in the near future.

Additionally, the GLASS website www.glass-uk.org provides members with a more comprehensive overview, and additionally contains a database of green lanes with relevant information attached. GLASS also has a (very!) active closed Email Forum, which enables lively and interactive debate to take place.

The effects of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 will start to bite over the next few years as the required Statutory Instruments are introduced. GLASS is committed to co-operation with any user group with a common interest in preserving what little percentage (currently around 5%) of the national RoW network is available to vehicular users.
